I had adapted to a new country, a different style of play and a completely new environment. On the pitch, I started to find my stride, and off it, I felt increasingly at home. Yet, that same season also revealed another side of elite sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite things going well for me personally, we were relegated with FC Wageningen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And at that very moment, the real process began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not physical.<br>Not football-wise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But on the inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where feelings and ambition clash<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The relegation meant everything was suddenly exposed again. Choices you'd rather postpone suddenly came to the fore. And that's precisely what makes elite sport so confronting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the one hand, I had a fantastic time in Wageningen.<br>I had really built something up there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friends.<br>Trust.<br>A place where I could be myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those are things you don't just let go of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But at the same time, I felt something else too. Something that grew stronger as the season drew to a close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question that kept coming back was simple, but decisive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udc49 What do I choose for my future?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Honest self-reflection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking back now, that was one of the most honest moments in my career. Because you can tell yourself all sorts of things, but deep down, you often know exactly how you feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And my feeling was clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I didn't fancy playing first division football, I wanted to develop further. That's why I had come to the Netherlands!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I'd had a good season: thirteen goals, not missed any matches through injury, and I'd shown that I could adapt to Dutch football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From day one, I set myself a goal: I wanted to see how far I could get in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And at such a moment, you have to ask yourself the question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does this situation still fit with where I want to go?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The tension of a real choice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What many people don't see is that this isn't solely a rational decision. It's not a simple sum of chances and statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a process in which feeling and ambition clash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You leave something behind that feels good.<br>Where people believe in you.<br>Where you have built memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>And yet you know:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I stay here, I might also stay at the same level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That realisation makes it exciting. Because growing doesn't just mean going somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also means leaving something behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Then came William II<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was at this stage that Willem II crossed my path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes you just know: <em>That's right, now, for me..<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through Nol de Ruiter, I got into conversation with coach Bert Jacobs. That conversation gave me exactly the feeling I needed to confirm my choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was not a step back.<br>This was not a safe choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was a step forward<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Willem II offered me an environment in which I could develop myself further.
