Every footballer dreams of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That moment when you no longer just play in youth football, but open the door to the real world of football. The world of contracts, competition, expectations and performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, that moment began when, as a young player, I got the chance to start as an apprentice at Hull City<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was the beginning of a journey that has taught me much more than just football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because if you really want to understand how the football world works, you must not only look at what happens on the pitch. You also need to understand what happens behind the scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And believe me: much of the truth lies in the dressing room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entering the locker room for the first time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I remember it well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first time I walked into the student pros' dressing room felt completely different from the Sunday youth games I came from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There, you knew everyone. You laughed together, trained together and everything felt familiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But here, everything was different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You walk in and immediately think:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How are these players going to see me?
How should I behave here?
What is expected of me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group consisted of players from different parts of the UK. Many of the boys were from the north of England, especially from the region around Newcastle. There were also players from Scotland, as Hull City had a partnership with a football school in Glasgow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And frankly: my first challenge was not even football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My first challenge was to understand them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dialects, culture and team dynamics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Anyone who has ever spoken to Geordies or Scots knows that sometimes it almost feels like listening to another language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the beginning, I really had to struggle to follow conversations properly. So what did I do? I listened. A lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in hindsight, that turned out to be one of the smartest things I could have done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of immediately wanting to profile myself, I took time to observe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do players talk to each other?
How do they respond to coaches?
Who has influence in the group?
Who is respected - and why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dressing room is actually a small society in itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have leaders. You have quiet workers. You have jokers. You have guys who want to prove themselves and players who have long known where their strengths lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a young player, it is important to first understand how those dynamics work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My mother's lesson<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before I left for Hull City, my mother gave me a simple but powerful lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cListen carefully to your coaches and to the people placed above you. They are there for a reason. They know what they are talking about.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That advice has always stuck with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a world where many young players want to show off immediately, it is tempting to come in with a big mouth. To act tough. To show that you think you are entitled to something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I have often seen that go wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respect is not claimed. Respect is earned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference between youth football and professional football<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the amateurs where I came from, I was doing well. I was one of the better players there. You are then quickly seen as a talent, as someone who stands out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when I joined Hull City, that perspective changed completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly, everyone was good.
Everyone had talent.
Everyone had ambition.
Everyone wanted to go pro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that means starting all over again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your old reputation no longer counts. What you showed before does not guarantee you the next step. You have to prove yourself again - in training, in competitions and in how you perform every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That took getting used to, but it also gave me focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My goal as a young player<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

From the start, I had one clear ambition: to become the best professional footballer I could be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not better than others to impress, but better than my own previous level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That attitude helped me stay focused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because in the dressing room, you are not the centre of attention. You are part of a team. And the faster you understand that, the faster you can really grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I saw happening to other young players<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In those early years, I saw many players come and go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not everyone made it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some were suffering from homesickness. Others were not training hard enough. Some couldn't handle the pressure of competitions. And still others got into trouble because of their behaviour in the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dressing room can be tough. If you don't fit into the team culture, it often shows quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That doesn't mean losing yourself. But it does mean understanding that team dynamics and character are at least as important as talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mental strength is as important as talent<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Of course, not everything went perfectly for me either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have also known periods when frustration mounted. Matches when nothing seemed to work. Moments when the pressure became palpable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I remember well once when I had to sweep the stands in the freezing cold and broke a broom in half out of frustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not my proudest moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it was a moment that showed me something important: professional football is not just about technique, physicality or talent. It's also about how you deal with disappointment, pressure and emotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mental strength is not an afterthought. It is essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two years later: my first pro contract<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first two years were a trial period. A chance to show that you could handle the level and that you were ready for more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then came that moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After two years, I got the chance to sign a full-time professional contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A dream come true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But at the same time, it also meant the next step: the first-team dressing room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there again, different rules, different expectations and a different level of professionalism apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The power of listening<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Looking back on that period, there is one habit that has helped me immensely: listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experienced players sometimes gave only small bits of advice. A comment on how to deal with trainers. An insight on how you set yourself up. A warning about how the football world really works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it was just a few sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But those sentences were golden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why? Because they came from people who had already walked the path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real world of football is behind the scenes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many people only see the outside of football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The matches.
The goals.
The interviews.
The highlights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the real world of football is often in other places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the bus.
On the training ground.
During recovery moments.
And most importantly: in the dressing room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is where friendships are formed. That's where tensions arise. That's where character is revealed. That's where you learn how people react under pressure. And there you also discover more and more who you are yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My advice to young players<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I am not saying that my way is the only way. Every player has his own path, his own character and his own learning process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if I can give one piece of advice to young players who want to make the step towards professional football, it is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stay calm. Listen. Observe. Learn from those around you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respect the experience of others, but also dare to stand up for yourself when necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The balance between respect and self-confidence is essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
