My father left when I was eight years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My mother did everything she could to keep life stable - and like many parents, she did not have a full picture of how the professional football world really works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What she did understand was responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During that period, I played at a strong amateur club: Bricknell Rangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four years in a row we became champions and cup winners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was top scorer every season and was named Player of the Year in my final year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also played for Hull Schoolboys and was part of Hull City's fourth team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Football was no longer a dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was already a proven route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The moment when everything could have changed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I heard that the head scout would visit our home to talk about a professional contract as an apprentice footballer, I felt proud. Really proud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a few days before that conversation, my mother came home with something else:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A vacancy at Reckitt &amp; Colman - a reputable company, offering a job as an electrician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To reassure her, I went for an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frankly, I thought they wouldn't hire me anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They even told me to cut my hair - because I would be working with machines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that moment, I realised how serious this suddenly became.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My mother's first reaction?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThen I call the club to say you have a job.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A quiet, defining conversation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I panicked inside and asked her to sit down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We didn't get into an argument. We didn't raise our voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We just sat there - for twenty minutes, silent, staring ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, I told her the truth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 16, football was not just something I enjoyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was what I was willing to give everything for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She listened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then she said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOkay. But don't come complaining to me when a club throws you out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was her way of saying: this world is unpredictable - and I worry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was not a control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it was precisely that mutual respect that made the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/robmcpro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/jonge-rob-met-trofeeen-1-1024x682.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-88284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robmcpro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/jonge-rob-met-trofeeen-1-980x653.png 980w, https:\/\/robmcpro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/jonge-rob-met-trofeeen-1-480x320.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Years later... perspective<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I played FC Groningen in the UEFA Cup against Atl\u00e9tico Madrid - and we knocked them out - my mother was sitting in the stands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the match, in the players' lounge, I joked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHey mum... maybe I should have taken that job at Reckitt &amp; Colman after all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We both laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because we both knew what that moment was really about: trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The real question for parents<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When your child is at a crossroads, ask yourself these questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do I believe my son or daughter can handle pressure, rejection and hard work - in football or on another path?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or do I choose safety because I am afraid?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For me, the most important thing was what was in my heart -<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and a parent who, despite her fear, respected that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let young people choose their own route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then really support them in this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not risky parenting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That's strong parenting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Want to discover more about what you really need to know if you want to progress in football?
