The biggest decisions in youth football are not always made on the pitch.

Sometimes they are taken at the kitchen table - quietly, but with consequences that last a lifetime.

Where my story really began...

I grew up in a single-parent family. My father left when I was eight years old.

My mother did everything she could to keep life stable - and like many parents, she did not have a full picture of how the professional football world really works.

What she did understand was responsibility.

During that period, I played at a strong amateur club: Bricknell Rangers.

Four years in a row we became champions and cup winners.

I was top scorer every season and was named Player of the Year in my final year.

I also played for Hull Schoolboys and was part of Hull City's fourth team.

Football was no longer a dream.

It was already a proven route.

The moment when everything could have changed

When I heard that the head scout would visit our home to talk about a professional contract as an apprentice footballer, I felt proud. Really proud.

But a few days before that conversation, my mother came home with something else:

A vacancy at Reckitt & Colman - a reputable company, offering a job as an electrician.

To reassure her, I went for an interview.

Frankly, I thought they wouldn't hire me anyway.

They did.

They even told me to cut my hair - because I would be working with machines.

In that moment, I realised how serious this suddenly became.

My mother's first reaction?

“Then I call the club to say you have a job.”

A quiet, defining conversation

I panicked inside and asked her to sit down.

We didn't get into an argument. We didn't raise our voices.

We just sat there - for twenty minutes, silent, staring ahead.

Finally, I told her the truth:

At 16, football was not just something I enjoyed.

It was what I was willing to give everything for.

She listened.

And then she said:

“Okay. But don't come complaining to me when a club throws you out.”

That was her way of saying: this world is unpredictable - and I worry.

It was not a control.

It was concern.

And it was precisely that mutual respect that made the difference.

Years later... perspective

When I played FC Groningen in the UEFA Cup against Atlético Madrid - and we knocked them out - my mother was sitting in the stands.

After the match, in the players' lounge, I joked:

“Hey mum... maybe I should have taken that job at Reckitt & Colman after all.”

We both laughed.

Because we both knew what that moment was really about: trust.

The real question for parents

When your child is at a crossroads, ask yourself these questions:

Do I believe my son or daughter can handle pressure, rejection and hard work - in football or on another path?

Or do I choose safety because I am afraid?

For me, the most important thing was what was in my heart -

and a parent who, despite her fear, respected that.

Let young people choose their own route.

And then really support them in this.

That is not risky parenting.

That's strong parenting.
